AP ART

The AP Program in Studio Art is intended for highly motivated students who are seriously interested in the study of art. Students should be aware that AP work involves significantly more commitment and accomplishment than the typical high school course and that the program is not for the casually interested.

Course objectives:
#1 Develop advanced skills in art.
A. Technical (you will learn new techniques)
B. Design (you will learn a variety of ways to develop a composition)
C. Creative (assignments will specifically deal with expanding your creativity with subject matter as well as technique)
#2 Compile and photograph a portfolio of your work.
A. The Breadth includes 12 pieces that show a variety of techniques and art forms. (AP A)
B. The Concentration includes 12 related pieces that are based on an individual’s
interest in a particular idea expressed visually. (AP B)
C. A Journal that incorporates artistic notes, thumbnail sketches, and ideas.
#3 Evaluate self and others in group critiques.
10% of overall grade is based on your participation in class critiques. We will have a critique for every assignment. If you are absent on a critique day then you will need to type a half page analysis of your picture.
Pictures will be graded the day after a critique.
#4 Seniors will design a brick and paint it.(AP C)
#5 Participate in various art shows and field trips.
#6 Learn how to photograph your own references.
You need have access and be able to use a camera.
You may use and check out the Art Department’s.

Originality
Any work that makes use of photographs, published images, and/or other artists’ works must show substantial and significant development beyond duplication. This may be demonstrated through manipulation of the formal qualities, design, and/or concept of the original work. It is unethical, constitutes plagiarism, and often violates copyright laws to simply copy an image (even in another medium) that was made by someone else.

Grading
*Each assignment will receive a detailed grade sheet.
*The portfolio will receive grades in progress and as a finished project.
*If you are late on an assignment;
1. penalty on your grade.
(1st late one equals one grade off, 2nd equals two grades off, 3rd one equals ½ off)
2. not have it included in the critique or the detailed evaluation.
3. not be able to improve your grade.
